Jason Wright to Transition from Commanders Role After 2024 Season
The landscape of the Washington Commanders is poised for another shift as Jason Wright, the team's trailblazing president, announced his plans to transition from his current role following the 2024 season. As a pivotal figure in the Commanders' recent history, Wright's departure marks the end of a transformative era for the franchise.
A New Chapter as Senior Adviser
Wright will not be leaving the organization entirely. Instead, he will take on a new role as a senior adviser. His primary focus in this capacity will be to ensure the completion of the Commanders' new stadium deal, a pivotal project for the team's future. "Given all those accomplishments, that's why I am proud to announce I will remain with the team throughout the 2024-2025 season, with the same responsibilities. In particular, I look forward to helping the organization complete its new stadium deal," said Wright.
Transformative Leadership
Wright began his tenure with the Commanders in 2020 when the team was still known as the Washington Football Team. Under his leadership, the franchise underwent a significant rebranding, emerging as the Washington Commanders in 2022. This rebranding was one of several accomplishments during Wright's time with the team, as he steered the organization through a period of immense challenge and uncertainty.
"I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished over the past four years. Together with an amazing team of professionals, we have taken this franchise through a period of immense challenge and uncertainty and have transformed it," Wright reflected. "We've set the table for an incredibly bright future under Josh's leadership. Over just the past year, we've welcomed record numbers of fans back into our building, made meaningful improvements to the fan experience, re-engaged with corporate partners, and reconnected with the community. Most importantly, we re-established a culture of respect in this organization."
A Tenure Marked by Historic Milestones
Wright's tenure with the Commanders was marked by several historic milestones. He made history as the NFL's first Black president of a team and is only the fourth former player to ascend to the position of president within an NFL franchise. His leadership saw a change in ownership as well, with Dan Snyder transferring the reins to Josh Harris.
Looking Forward to New Endeavors
As Wright transitions to his new advisory role, he is also eyeing new leadership opportunities. Reports indicate he is a finalist for the position of president with the Green Bay Packers, signaling his ongoing influence and presence in the NFL.
Wright expressed his gratitude and optimism as he prepares for this next chapter. "This feels like the right moment for me to explore my next leadership opportunity. I'm extremely grateful to my Commanders colleagues, our fans, and this community for all that we have accomplished these past four years, and am looking forward to the start of a very successful season for the Burgundy and Gold," he added.
As the Commanders look ahead to the future, Jason Wright's legacy will undoubtedly serve as a cornerstone for the team’s continued growth and success. His forthcoming role as a senior adviser to spearhead the new stadium deal will surely play a critical part in shaping the next chapter of the Commanders' story.
