Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton has become a prominent figure in the NBA, recently showcasing his talents on the global stage with Team USA. Haliburton's story begins in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where he was born and raised. As a high school freshman, his budding basketball journey took a surprising turn when he was effectively let go from the Playground Warriors AAU team. "They never said that I was cut, but my parents told me that it was essentially like, 'He can come if he wants to,'" Haliburton recalls. The experience left a lasting impact on the young athlete. “I left in tears because I was so embarrassed of what was going on,” he admits, reflecting on the emotional toll it took.
Determined to continue his basketball aspirations, Haliburton joined Wisconsin United, a Milwaukee-based team, despite the three-hour round trip required from Oshkosh. Under the guidance of Coach Bryan Johnikin, Haliburton's distinctive shooting form began to take shape. During one memorable practice session, Johnikin used his 3-year-old grandson as a defender to emphasize Haliburton’s low release point, a technique that would later become a hallmark of his game.
Haliburton's shot is unique, starting with the ball positioned in front of his chest and ending with a catapult-like motion that produces noticeable sidespin. Despite its unorthodox appearance, the effectiveness of his shot is undeniable. "To the average fan, or anybody who plays, obviously it isn't textbook. But there's no denying how effective it is. It's straight cash, is the best way I can put it," praises Pacers guard TJ McConnell.
Throughout his career, this unconventional style has served Haliburton well. Over six seasons between Iowa State and the NBA, he has shot below 40% from behind the arc just once. The lone dip in his shooting percentage occurred last season when he rushed back from a hamstring injury. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 185 pounds, Haliburton’s performance on the court has solidified his status as one of the league’s rising stars.
Haliburton's resilience and commitment have been central to his success. The early setback with the Playground Warriors continues to drive him. "Because I don't ever want to get back to a place like that," he asserts, underscoring the personal motivation behind his hard work and dedication.
