New York Mets right-hander Christian Scott is set to undergo elbow surgery next week, a procedure that will address his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) and install an internal brace. Unfortunately, this will keep him sidelined through the entire 2025 season.
Scott's absence has been felt since he was last seen on the mound on July 21. Just two days later, on July 23, he was officially placed on the injured list with what the team described as a UCL strain. This marks the continuation of elbow issues that have plagued Scott since last season, when he missed over two weeks late in the campaign.
Season-Ending Injury
Scott's 2023 season, which held promise, has been prematurely cut short. The right-hander managed nine big-league starts this year, compiling a 4.56 ERA and a 3.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio before his injury. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza has emphasized a cautious approach regarding Scott's injury, stating, "It's too early to tell. I'm not going to sit here and speculate when we don't have all the facts and all the information. We've got to wait till the doctors and all the people that have to read the MRI and all that, and then we'll make that decision."
Mound Woes
Scott is not the only Mets starter facing health challenges. Key starters Kodai Senga and Paul Blackburn are also missing from the rotation. Blackburn was recently shut down due to a spinal fluid leak in his back, further depleting the Mets' pitching strength. These injuries create a formidable challenge for New York as they strive to maintain their grip on a playoff spot.
Playoff Push
Despite their injury woes, the Mets continue to focus on their remaining games. Entering Wednesday, they boast an 83-68 record and are tied for the league's second wild-card spot alongside the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Mets hold a slim two-game lead over the Atlanta Braves, the first team outside the playoff bracket.
The upcoming series in Atlanta could have significant playoff implications for the Mets. With a three-game series against the Braves next week, New York's postseason aspirations may hinge on their performance on the road.
As the Mets battle through a litany of injuries, they remain resolute. The loss of Christian Scott is undoubtedly a significant blow, but the team continues to press forward, aiming to solidify their position in the playoffs.
